What is story massage?
A respectful positive touch in the form of a series of massage strokes linked to a story.
We all love a good story or rhyme and when combined with the benefits of positive touch, stories present wonderful opportunities for fun, creativity and interaction.
There are 10 simple strokes to learn which form the basis of the Story Massage Training.
These 10 massage strokes/moves have easy-to-remember names and pictures/symbols making them easy to use and follow. For example, “the circle” is just as it says, it is a circular massage move.

There are many benefits, I have listed just a few below:
Physical:
- The opportunity of dedicated “calming time”. Story massage help bring relaxation of mind and body and teaches the essential life skill of conscious relaxation.
- It improves sleep by encouraging relaxation.
Emotional:
- Increased self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Regulation of emotions as Story Massage can help with processing difficult emotions and feelings so children react to situations in a calmer manner.
- Trust-building between giver and receiver which can help encourage the release of any concerns via Story Massage.
Social:
- Reduction of aggressive and hyperactive behaviour. Children and adults feel calmer and less anxious after sharing Story Massage which is reflected in their behaviour.
- Increased awareness and sensitivity towards others, with more awareness of how actions and emotions can affect others.
- Building friendships and encouraging bonding with others in a fun and interactive way.
Educational:
- Readiness for learning - helping children focus their minds.
- Alternatives and engaging way of encouraging the development of wider vocabulary.
- Improved concentration and engagement.
- Development of imagination and story-telling.
Anyone aged 0-100. It is not age related, it can help small babies, or children or adults and senior citizens.
Story Massage Workshops (face to face available to book from September'22)
On-line workshops via Zoom available on request (1:1 or group sessions).
- Short informal 1.5 hour workshop which introduce you to the Story Massage (SM) guidelines , techniques and strokes.
- Handouts provided.
- Explanation and demonstration of some of the SM massage techniques.
- Practical hands on sessions using the techniques on fellow delegates or children you may have brought with you.
- Short session on designing your own SM story and SM strokes/techniques.
Venue:
TBA for private workshops, these will vary.

Costs:
Private workshops - £15 per person, if young child/person also attending £25 for both to attend.
Groups/toddler/child group sessions (with parents) Price to be agreed on an individual basis.
What to bring?
Handouts are provided, so just bring writing paper and pen if you want to make your own notes for future reference. A comfy big cushion if you or child would prefer to sit on that, otherwise chairs will be used.
Refreshments will be provided.

- A story massage powerpoint giving some different stories about hygiene.
- Several videos showing how to execute the moves for different stories, nursery rhymes, educational, more personal/adapted Story Massage stories.
- Pre and post course support as required via email, zoom and phone calls.
Costs for on-line training:
Option 1: For access to all downloadable material, handouts, videos, posters and powerpoints £25.00
Option 2: All contained in 1 above and an on-line zoom workshop - 45 mins £45.00
